„modparlor“?

The term/sylable mod comes from different sources. One being the term „modernist“. It’s a cultural movement that started in the 1960ies in Great Britain with roots in a movement of young coniseurs of modern Jazz music. It is also a shorthand of the term „modification“, which can mean modification of anything from software, to electronic hardware and/or their enclosures, vehicles or even human bodies. Mod is also the shorthand for the term „module“ which usually means an interchangeable functional part of something larger. This can be machinery, electronics, software or something other.

The specifc term modparlor was initially coined in the opening sentence of the novel „The Diamond Age“ by Neal Stephenson.
